Interpersonal Biofeedback
Your Body Is Part of the Conversation
Think about what happens during a difficult conversation. Your heart beats faster. Your breathing changes. Muscles tighten. You become agitated — or shut down. Before you know it, it's harder to listen, think clearly or say what you actually mean.
Interpersonal Biofeedback makes these normally unseen responses visible, helping you recognize what is happening in your body as you interact with another person — and learn to regulate those responses before they hijack the conversation.
How Does It Work?
Seeing what normally happens outside your awareness.
In regular biofeedback, sensors measure physiological activity such as heart rate, breathing, muscle tension or sweat on the skin. That information is displayed in real time, allowing you to see changes that normally happen outside your awareness.
With Interpersonal Biofeedback, the focus shifts to what happens between two people as they interact. You can see when your body becomes activated, what is happening between you when it does, and how each person's response may affect the other.
How Is It Used in Counseling?
Bringing unnoticed patterns into the conversation.
Interpersonal Biofeedback can be incorporated into counseling when physiological reactivity gets in the way of communication or connection. It can help reveal words, interactions or nonverbal cues associated with that reactivity and bring patterns that may have gone unnoticed into the conversation.
Seeing and discussing these patterns together can foster greater understanding, empathy and intimacy. Interpersonal Biofeedback is one of many tools we may use. It isn't something every client needs — or something necessary in every session.
A complimentary consultation
A complimentary consultation gives you an opportunity to share a little about what's going on, get your questions answered and get a feel for whether the fit is right.
